A Tertulia* is a meeting, informal and periodic, of people interested in a theme or in a particular branch of art or of science, to debate, to learn or to share ideas and opinions. Generally the meeting takes place in a café or library
There may be tertulias about bullfighting, literary, or of any type, even general interest tertulias. It is the norm—not established but generally assumed—to wickedly attack and discredit a person that does not come to the tertulia or to do so during the time in which he or she has delayed in arriving. This is done so that no one misses the tertulia and that everyone takes their attendance and membership seriously. The regulars – ah, if there are any! – to the tertulia are those called tertulianos. A tertulia of a good level usually a first-rate educational tool, and the first thing you learn in these meetings is tolerance and a critical sense. On the other hand, a tertulia permits those interested in friendship and build relationships with those of his or her profession as well as enrich his or her culture, and the neophytes learn from the more experienced and informally meet the people of their area. *(Wikipedia)
