Who can use the library?

The library is open to whoever is interested in the Spanish and Latin American language and culture. Library materials can be used in the library by anyone free of charge, however in order to check out library materials it is necessary to become a member of a student at the Institute Cervantes.

What are the library hours­­?

Sunday and Monday: Closed
Tuesday - Thursday: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm
Friday: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Saturday: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Sunday and Monday: Closed

How do I search the library catalog?

Access to the library catalog is available from the library computers and also on the Internet.

The library catalog is updated daily.

How do I get a library card?

To get a library card you must purchase a membership ($50/year, $25 for students/seniors, $75 for family, 2 cards) or register for a class

How many materials can I check out at once and for how long?

You can check out a maximum of 8 items (maximum of 3 audiovisuals) at a time:

  • Books (2 weeks)
  • DVDs, Videos, CDs, Cassettes (1 week)

Can I renew materials that I’ve checked out?

Borrowers may renew a loan provided that no previous request has been received by the library. A request for renewal cannot be honoured after the current loan period has expired, in which case the item on loan must be returned to the library. Renewals can be made in the library, by telephone, fax or email, or directly through the internet Audiovisuals are non-renewable.

What if I can’t find what I’m looking for at your library?

The library will try to answer questions concerning the Spanish Language and Culture using its own resources (books, databases...) and also external resources (Internet, information centres, specialized libraries). Queries can be done by telephone, mail, fax or email. The library has several databases for Spanish and Latin American bibliography and documentary information. Also, through the inter-library loan service, we can request available materials for you from the worldwide Instituto Cervantes library network, as well as from other libraries in Spain.

Do you have books in other languages besides Spanish? In English?

The library offers materials in Catalán, Galician, and Basque. We also offer a collection of English translations of important works of Spanish and Spanish American literature.

Does the library offer orientations for new members?

The library staff is at your disposal to respond to any questions you may have relating to the use of the library, materials, and services. The library gives guided tours to small groups of interested users. Visits must be pre-arranged and will take place outside of the normal opening hours.
